Coming at you all the way from the San Francisco Bay Area is a three piece band playing greasy rock n roll with a bluesy/hard rock/stoner edge- Ranchero! Influences ranging from Pat Travers, Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin, ZZ Top; their self-titled release is awesome for you real mother f*ckin’ rock n’ rollers out there!
With quite literally “No Time To Waste” as the title of track one implies, this album starts things off in the right direction with a groovy bass lick and grinding guitar strings. The spirit of rock is ignited right from the start with the energy and force of this killer three piece. There’s an old-school charm to this song, especially in the way that the vocal pattern is put together. In track 2 “El Torino” we get nice and doomy; bringing those Black Sabbath-like tones to the surface. This classic doom groove carries into the following track “Swallow Your Soul.”
“Swallow Your Soul” has a sinister smile hidden behind the lyrics, yet it shares a similar melancholy to it as well that puts me into that good ole Alice In Chains place; something like “Die Young” or “Man In The Box” even. Check out the lyric video for “Swallow Your Soul” below!
Speaking of Jesus as a subject (referring to “Man In The Box”) this next song is titled “Jesus With The Blacked Out Eyes”. This track starts slow and winds things up as it progresses. Attitude and drive continue to thrive as we progress into “Gypsy Highway” and “Puking Oil.”
“Puking Oil” is my second favorite track on the album (“No Time To Waste” being the first). I used to go see the Indie Cars race at the Milwaukee Mile when I was a kid with my dad, and if I had to pick a song that accurately describes what its like to be a metalhead at one of these things-this would be the track! It’s packed with killer leads and hooks. The chorus is catchy as well.
“Big Wheel” is the final track on this album. This track has a lot of 80’s feels in it. It sort of reminds me of Anthrax in parts, as well as the very first of Iron Maiden; yet it still leaves that doom flavor in your mouth. This tune provides us with a solid and satisfying finish to Ranchero’s debut release, and I look forward to hearing more!
This album is packed with defiance, attitude, drive and passion-but most importantly SOUL! It brings together a lot of awesome classic styles from some of the greatest eras of metal/rock and smashes them together with grace and force. Get your copy of ‘Ranchero’ HERE today!
